The Challenges

  • More than 70% of adults in Androscoggin County eat fewer than five servings of fruits and vegetables a day1.
  • 80% of youth in Maine eat fewer than five servings a day of fruits and vegetables and drink fewer than three glasses of milk a day2.
  • 62% of adults in Androscoggin County are overweight or obese3.
  • 13% of Maine youth in grades 9-12 are overweight. In the U.S. , 13.9% of children ages 2-5 are overweight, 18.8% of children ages 6-11 are overweight and 17.4% of children ages 12-19 are overweight4.

How Healthy Androscoggin is Meeting the Challenge

  • The Nutrition Resource Guide provides a list of affordable food access programs, state and local nutrition resources, nutrition counselors, weight management groups and diabetes education organizations.
  • Healthy Androscoggin partners with other organizations to promote healthy eating:
    • Help Lots to Gardens and the farmers' markets with publicity and promotion;
    • Assist St. Mary's with the Nutrition Resource Center ;
    • Partnered with the Maine Nutrition Network to provide United Somali Women of Maine with informational materials through a grant Healthy Androscoggin received in 2006
    • Participates in the Maine Youth Overweight Collaborative .
  • Healthy Androscoggin provides guest speakers to discuss healthy eating.
